Asif Ghayas was born in Karachi. When he was just eight years old, his elder brother Razi Iqbal (who is a good sketch artist) noticed his artistic capabilities. Asif was different from the other boys of his age, he was never interested in playing games or taking part in any type of physical activity, his only passion was sketching. Using pencils or even coal, he used to sketch on the walls of his house and even the outer walls of his neighbourhood. Many of his neighbours had regular complaints against him. Instead of getting furious about the complaints, his elder brother realized that this young kid had a potential of becoming a good artist. Because of his elder brother’s efforts, Asif found himself working as a student of the legendary sketch artist Iqbal Mehdi. For the next eight years, Asif was busy learning the art of sketching and painting. His work is inspired by the work of his teacher. Asif has also created his own individual style and his perspectives are based mostly on wider angles in his portraits, still life or scenic paintings. Asif believes that his brush is his tool for transferring his inner voice, his thoughts and his moods on the canvas. Although he has worked in many mediums, he still feels that pen and ink sketches are closest to his heart.

Asif has been working for Agha Khan University Hospital for three years. His work has been depicted in AKUH’s calendars, greeting cards and the covers of their newsletter. His paintings and sketches are on display at various art galleries of Karachi, including Canvas art gallery, Kolachi art gallery, Dream art gallery and Master art gallery. Asif firmly believes that art can be adopted as a full-time profession too. In these modern times, an artist has various options to choose from. He says, “I belonged to the lower middle class, my talent helped me to rise from lower to the upper strata.” He is not concerned about the monetary benefits, he just wants his work to be critically acclaimed.
