Among
the latest exhibitions going on in Karachi, the Indus Gallery
recently showed a collection of drawings depicting people
of the Thar region of Sindh by the veteran artist Nusratji.
Nusratji’s successful ‘Horse’ series of
paintings, spontaneous and colourful, verge on abstraction,
and this impressionistic method of capturing a mood or a moment
is continued in her style of drawing. There are few details
in the figures, faces are without features, but a flowing
movement expresses the artist’s viewpoint. Mansoora
Hassan, visiting from Turkey where she currently resides,
exhibited an unusual installation at the Canvas Gallery, based
on the philosophy and movement of the whirling dervish: I
am Wind You are Fire, an ongoing multimedia work in progress
from the ‘Spiritual Journey’ series. Visitors
to Mansoora’s exhibition viewed paintings in which the
artist expressed the emotions of the dancers through her brush
and media.
A recently opened IVS Gallery, situated at Indus Valley School
of Art and Architecture, displayed an exhibition of innovative
contemporary calligraphic works by Rashid Arshed, currently
Head of the Fine Art Department of the Indus Valley School.
A novel addition to the attractions of the IVS, there are
ambitious plans in the pipeline for future events possibly
involving the talented faculty members
.
At the Citi Art Gallery, the lush, exotic work of the well-
known painter Zoay, attracted an appreciative audience. The
artist’s assured use of form and colour is a signature
characteristic used to create ancient symbols of Eastern tradition
in a wholly contemporary style.
The VM Gallery has a much-anticipated exhibition by the much-travelled
Tara Sabarwal in the near future; more about that next time.
