If
You Are Attacked
Do not resist… just give your valuables
away… and live!!!
* Use common sense. Try to talk your way out of it.
* Try to negotiate.
* Stall for time.
* Be verbally assertive.
If the attacker threatened you with a deadly weapon, and you
came out of it alive, you took the proper course of action.
During an armed attack, you must decide the proper course of
action. There is no hard and fast rule as to self-defence. You
must consider your physical capabilities, your location, and
your perceived chances of success. If you cannot escape, bide
your time and look for another opportunity, a half-hearted attempt
could be worse than no attempt at all
.
* Notify the police as soon as you get the opportunity, and
if there are witnesses, ask them to stay until the police arrives.
* It is not advisable to carry guns, clubs, knives, or chemical
sprays. It is illegal to carry some of these weapons, and they
could be used against you.
* And finally, if a crime occurs, do report it.
How you can help reduce your risk of
being a victim of crime?
You can make yourself safer and protect your home, your family
and your belongings by following some of these simple suggestions.
It is also important to remember that most crime are against
property, not people. Most crimes are ‘spur of the moment’
actions, often in response to the opportunity of an open window
or valuables on display.
HOME
SAFETY AND SECURITYld and property
Home security is the best way to reduce your chances of being
burgled. A lot of burglaries are usually spur of the moment,
as a burglar may see an open window or other easy point of
entry and take their chance.
While You Are Out
* Try not to go out alone at night. Avoid unfamiliar areas,
if possible.
* Don’t take short cuts: don’t walk in or near
alleys, and don’t walk on deserted streets.
* Don’t hitchhike, and if someone suspicious is following
you, cross the street and walk into a group of people.
In Your Automobile
* Never pick up hitchhikers.
* Don’t park in the dark.
* Never leave your keys in the car.
* Never allow another vehicle to follow you home.
* Have your keys in hand so you can open the car door without
delay.
* Always keep your car in gear when stopped at a traffic signal
or stop sign, so if threatened in any way, you can quickly
drive away.
Purse
Protection
* If at all possible, don’t carry a purse.
*l When possible, carry your wallet, keys, and other valuables
on your person, or in an inside pocket, or any other suitable
place, rather than your purse. Your purse should be used to
carry brushes, combs, make-up, etc.
* Credit cards and cheques should be carried instead of cash.
Maintain a record of the account numbers at home. Carry only
the cards you will be using.
* Carry a shoulder bag securely between your arm and body
away from traffic.
* Crime worldwide is increasing. It is time we citizens fight
it together. We need to enforce very strong laws to punish
criminals and get them off our streets.
