Recently
APWA organized a meeting with the media to introduce
its Life Skills Based Education (LSBE) programme,
which has been initiated in different private schools
of Karachi. This programme is sponsored by World Population
Foundation (WPF), National Aids Control Programme
(NACP) and The Global Fund for Aids, TB and Malaria
(GFATM). LSBE is different from traditional teaching
methods as it uses participatory approach for learning,
as a result of which the environment of the classroom
becomes supportive. In its first phase (July 2005),
18 private schools of Karachi were included. Selected
teachers participated in a five-day workshop, after
which they started delivery sessions twice a week
in their respective schools. WPF extended its programme
for one year and more schools were included in the
programme. At present it is it is being conducted
in 32 private schools. Meher Kirmani (Executive Vice
President, APWA) said, “The menace of Aids is
lurking and we are trying our level best to teach
youngsters to say ‘NO’. LSBE is not sex
education, it is teaching protection against abuse.
The abuse can happen anywhere. We are educating our
school-going children.” |
