A two-day workshop, titled Political Parties: Structures and Women Representation was organized by the Women Media Centre, Pakistan with the help of National Endowment for Democracy, USA. The Executive Director of Centre for Civic Education Pakistan, Zafarullah Khan conducted the workshop. The aim of the workshop, according to WMC Executive Director Fauzia Shaheen, was to create awareness among women journalists about the basic structure and working of political parties and the significant role women played in it. The workshop was attended by students of Karachi University, Jinnah University for Women and Federal Urdu University apart from female media correspondents
The British Council Pakistan organized a High Achievers Award Ceremony to celebrate the success of Pakistani students in the GCE school exams, UOL external degree programme and ACCA. The ceremony was held in partnership with Cambridge International Examinations, Edexcel International, University of London and ACCA Pakistan. Two cash prize awards, sponsored by Cambridge International Examinations of £ 500 each were awarded to Faran Abbas of Beaconhouse School, for being the Top O level student in Karachi, and Mohammed Khurram Jah of Karachi Grammar School, for being the Top A level student in Karachi. The British Council also organized an alumni dinner and entertainment event in honour of members of the British Alumni Association, education consultants and high achievers of GCE exams.

Recently APWA organized a meeting with the media to introduce its Life Skills Based Education (LSBE) programme, which has been initiated in different private schools of Karachi. This programme is sponsored by World Population Foundation (WPF), National Aids Control Programme (NACP) and The Global Fund for Aids, TB and Malaria (GFATM). LSBE is different from traditional teaching methods as it uses participatory approach for learning, as a result of which the environment of the classroom becomes supportive. In its first phase (July 2005), 18 private schools of Karachi were included. Selected teachers participated in a five-day workshop, after which they started delivery sessions twice a week in their respective schools. WPF extended its programme for one year and more schools were included in the programme. At present it is it is being conducted in 32 private schools. Meher Kirmani (Executive Vice President, APWA) said, “The menace of Aids is lurking and we are trying our level best to teach youngsters to say ‘NO’. LSBE is not sex education, it is teaching protection against abuse. The abuse can happen anywhere. We are educating our school-going children.”
 
     
 
 
     
 
At the residence of the embassy of the Republic, the Ambassador of Turkey and Mrs Engen Soysal arranged a poetic presentation of Moulana Jalal-al-din Rumi, Soaring to Ecstasy by Yildiz Kenter and Talat Halman to celebrate his 800th anniversary. The presentation was based on colour slides, recorded music and a colour documentary and narration by Vanessa Redgrave and Talat Halman. The script for narration and documentary was written by the latter.

Talat Halman is the first Minister of Culture of the Turkish Republic and currently he is the Chairman and Professor, Department of Turkish literature and Dean of Humanities and Letters, Bilkent University, Ankara. He has published more than 60 books and 3000 articles in Turkish and English. He has also served as the elected member of the UNICEF Turkish National Committee, he holds honorary doctorate from Bazaziei and Ankara Universaties.

Professor Yildiz Kenter is a prominent stage actress of Turkey. Born in Istanbul to Turkish and British parents, she graduated from the Ankara State Conservatory, achieved fame at the State Theatre Wing, Neighbourhood playhouse and Actor’s Studio on a Rockfeller Fellowship. She established Turkey’s leading theatre in early sixties, Kent Player, with her brother Mustik Kenter and husband Sukran Gungor. She has directed over 100 plays and has performed everywhere in Turkey and abroad in US, France, Britain, Russia, Finland, Denmark and other countries.

Welcoming the guests, the Ambassador Soysal, who is new in Pakistan, said it was an honour for him to host such prominent personalities such as Prof. Halman and Prof. Kenter for what was his maidan official social gathering in Pakistan after only a month’s stay. The ambassador also mentioned that he will continue the cultural activities started by his predecessor and will also seek the help of his guest of honour Prof. Talat Halman for his ideas. The performance was followed by light reception by Turkish delights courtesy the embassy.
