Two
home truths make a strong presence as Sanam Raees talks
shop; one that she does proud all the academic distinctions
bestowed on her and two, that she was born with a penchant
for textiles.
An NCA graduate of three years standing, Raees, who also
teaches Product Design at the PSFD, besides weaving customized
upholstery for a number of branded furniture vendors and
surface designing for Sequins, Chen One, Maria B and Insignia,
emanates a vibrant, fast track synergy as she expounds on
the plethora of options that she creates out from a single
textile surface. Working with her own unit of hand-looms
and trained staff, Raees admits that she is lucky to have
the freedom to combine aesthetic acumen and animated, creative
flights of fancy with professional know-how. And yet nothing
came to her on a platter; a father in the business of textile
export…knitwear to be exact…notwithstanding.
Armed with an enlightening exposure and the requisite academic
arsenal, Raees then stepped on to a launching pad from where
it has been an onward flight all the way, with the moon
not too far away! “Also, from day one I knew that
my interest in interiors could only be nurtured if based
on sound academic knowledge of textiles.” That schooling
also made her recognize her forte… colour tones developed
around linear textures that she moulds imaginatively to
create interior specific nuances. The result is an undeniably
vocal ambiance which substitutes for a thousand words. Only
last year Raees was declared the winner of the Best Entrepreneur’s
Award at the Women’s Expo organized by the government
of the Punjab.
Thus well equipped, Raees works abroad a palette with lightning
speed, picking this, choosing that, translating dream ideas
into physical realities. From custom designed upholstery
and colour coordinated soft furnishing to an unbelievable
range of interior relevant accessories, from cushions to
lampshades to personalized room settings with coordinated
floorings and floor coverings, wall hangs and creativity
in ceramic, the spread of her product today may well be
the tip of an iceberg that hides more than it shows to the
world.
SHE’s young twenty-something designer of the month
prefers dust-safe products. “We have a range of standard
fabrics, all one of a kind since my team of workers has
been trained by me, but the excitement comes when the fabric
gets to be treated for any one project. And that’s
what I really relish since the excitement of creating options
from a single base can be immeasurable…almost surprising
for the variety that can evolve.”.
