Professor S. Adibul Hassan Rizvi, Director Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) and President Elect, Transplantation Society of Pakistan, held a press meeting at Dewan Farooq Medical Complex of SIUT recently. He thanked the electronic and print media for their unconditional support during SIUT’s struggle for the implementation of Transplantation of Human Organ and Tissue Law. Prof. Rizvi said that with implementation of this law at least 1500 poor people will be spared the exploitation and misery of selling their organs. Our country was known as the Organ Bazaar. Transplant tourism flourished and patients from all over the world used to come here to buy kidneys from poor bonded labourers and farmers. With this combined struggle for Transplantation Law, the Transplantation Society of Pakistan and the press have created awareness among the people that for end-stage organ failure, when medical treatment has failed, transplantation is the only answer. With the implementation of this law, patients with heart, liver, pancreas, intestine and lung failure will be able to receive organs retrieved from cadaver donors. Once fully functional, this cadaver organ transplantation programme will save 50,000 lives yearly. Prof. Rizvi pointed out that with this law, the government has established a fund to help poor patients for their treatment, specially post-transplant follow-up and medication which is the biggest cost to the patient. This is a unique opportunity in our history that poor and needy patients will get treatment from the government fund. SIUT needs your zakat and donations. You can submit your donation in any major branch of UBL, MCB, NBP, HBL, Bank Alfalah, Union Bank, Meezan Bank, Faysal Bank and PICIC Bank or make a cheque/bank draft/pay order and send it to Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Civil Hospital, Karachi-74200, Pakistan. Tel: (92-21) 111-000-313, 9215752 and 9215718. Fax: (92-21) 2745802. |
