My First Love’, a short story by 20-year-old Mira Sethi about love blossoming in an unforgiving religious household, has won top prize in a writing competition organized by the Goethe-Institut, Oxford University Press and Heinrich Boll Foundation.

The awards ceremony was held recently at the institute as part of the 6oth Independence Day celebration of Pakistan, the 50th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in the country and the 90th birth anniversary of Heinrich Boll. The three topics were ‘My aspirations’, ‘Me, my mother and my daughter’ and ‘My first love’. The top 20 entries will be compiled in the form of a book to be published by the OUP International Women’s Day.

Mira Sethi is the daughter of Daily Times Editor and the Friday Times Founding Editor-in-Chief Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, who is the managing editor and published of TFT and publisher of Good Times magazine.

The second prize was awarded to Sahar Rizvi from Karachi for a poem title ‘Shikari’. A special Juror’s Prize was also announced for Sadaf Halai for her poem ‘Laughter for the Living’. The poem, whose title is reminiscent of Milan Kundera’s ‘Laughter and Forgetting’, draws on two deaths: one about a man being electrocuted and then another about a man hit by a laundry van.

All 20 winners have been invited to a week-long creative writing skills workshop to be organized in Lahore at the end of November. All winners received certificates designed by the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, and the top 10 entries also received Cash prizes.

The prize distribution was punctuated by performances by Sajid Hussain on the sitar, and Umair Hussain on the tabla. The brothers, who belong to the Jaipur gharana of classical music, enthralled the audience with renditions of raag darbari, Rajashtani folk, and Pakistani folk music.
