Change is What We Need
It is a shame that the condition of education in Pakistan remains questionable even after 61 years of its independence. A headline in recent newspapers screamed, “Students caught taking Class X exam in their school with teachers’ help”; one could not help but pity the sad state of affairs in the local education system. The flagrant use of unfair means by students is not something new or unheard of. What was unusually embarrassing and glaring of this incident was the fact that it was the parents and teachers who were students’ accomplices in this crime – openly helping them solve their papers. Moreover, the venue was an unauthorized examination centre – being the students’ own school, running with the connivance of the centre superintendent and invigilation staff of a ‘model school’, in the vicinity!
Education, being the single most important tool for any nation’s prosperity, remains to be the most ignored by those in power. Furthermore, those concerned with measly monetary benefits have plunged to such low levels that it seems impossible to combat with such occurrences. What is often easily overlooked by such offenders is the bigger picture; at the end of the day nobody is benefited, those who are worthy of good positions are deprived, hence a nation doomed to regress.
It is high time now that those who have taken the humongous responsibility of education on their shoulders should understand their duty towards the nation. The local syllabi are in terrible need of revision, and our examination system needs a thorough reform. Not to mention that the literature given to the students of Class IX and X remains to be almost the same today as was given to their ancestors. Change is what we desperately need!
