The positive response of art collectors to an auction of contemporary paintings from the Middle Eastern and South Asian countries held in London in June, has led to a further venture by Bonhams to be held in Dubai in October at the Royal Mirage Hotel, Dubai. Among the featured work by notable artists from Pakistan, Iran, India and numerous Arab countries, one is justified in highlighting most important works of art by Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Jamil Naqsh and by Sadequain.
An important aspect of the exhibition and sale is the collaboration with the charity known as START/AL-MADAD, an association that provides education and opportunities to underprivileged children. From Bonhams Contemporary Middle East and South Asian Art Department came the interesting news that in the last 10 months, the development of a buyers’ market has seen many important works of art offered at auction at extremely attractive prices.

Many paintings of earlier years are now finding their way to the market. From an early collection there was a painting by Masood Kohari of sailing ships, a piece produced in the 60s that had stood the test of time. The present collection includes the paintings in various media by notable Iranian artists, while previous exhibitions included a collector’s item in the presence of a Bashir Mirza painting from the ‘Lonely Girl’ series.

Among the paintings listed from Pakistan are included works by Ustad Allah Bux and Tasaduq Sohail, while eminent Arab and artists such as Louai Kayyali, Yousaf Ahmed and Paul Guiragossian, will be shown with the Iranian masters Sohrab Sepehri and Massoud Arabshai.
Bonhams is one of the world’s largest and oldest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, founded in 1793.
For those interested in the development and current status of art in Pakistan, it is encouraging to note that not only the Old Masters, but also the unique artists of present times are included in the catalogues of art produced by Bonhams, which have now become collector’s items. It appears the admirers of art from Pakistan are widening their aesthetic horizons, perhaps investing in the future as well as acknowledging the past.
